Portfolio
Your final assignment in this class will be a
writing portfolio that represents your understanding of
technical communication. It is intended to be a vehicle for you
to show your best work.
Contents
Your portfolio will contain the following
materials:
- revised, corrected copies of the following major
assignments:
- Multicultural Memo
- Job Letter and Résumé
- Claim Letter and Solicitation Email
- Instructions

revised, corrected copies of the reflexive
memos for each major assignment listed above;
-
a summative memo (1000-1500 words) in which
you reflect on your work throughout the semester.
Summative Memo Contents
Here are some general suggestions for topics to address in
the summative reflective memo:
- Choices you made while revising each document:
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of each
document?
- What difficulties did you encounter when creating
each document?
- Your overall opinion of each document:
- Which document are you most proud of?
- Which document are you least proud of?
- Which document was the most challenging to create?
- Your overall opinion of the assignments:
- Which assignment did you learn the most from?
- Which assignment was the easiest for you?
- Which assignment was the most difficult for you?
- How did the reflective memos impact your thinking
about the assignments?
- Your personal progress as a technical communicator:
- Did you accomplish something in this portfolio that
surprised you?
- What can you do as a writer that you could not do
before?
- What will you take away from this class?
- What have you learned that will be useful in your
life outside college?
You do not need to address all of these
topics. They are starting points for your thoughts.
Deliverables
1. Hard Copy Packet
You will submit a packet containing hard copies of all the
relevant documents. Arrange the documents in the following
order:
- Summative Reflective Memo
- Multicultural Memo
- Multicultural Reflective Memo
- Job Letter
- Résumé
- Job Letter & Résumé Reflective Memo
- Claim Letter
- Solicitation Email
- Claim Letter & Solicitation Email Reflective Memo
- Instructions
- Instructions Reflective Memo
Due Date
Portfolios are due by 5 p.m., August 5 th. 2009.
Grading
Your portfolios will be assessed against the following
rubric:
- Contents
Has the student included all required evidence for
fulfilling objectives, including a summative reflective memo
and all revised copies of coursework?
- Objectives
Does the portfolio show that the student has met
the course objectives successfully?
- Revision
Has the student revised adequately in keeping with the
instructor's comments on initial versions of documents?
- Reflection
Has the student reflectively integrated the course
objectives into a growing sense of him- or herself as a
technical communicator?
- Presentation
Has the student presented the material in a well-designed,
usable package?
